The number of corona infections diagnosed in India has risen to nearly 700,000.
That means the number of coronation cases in the country is now higher than in Russia, where around 681,000 people have been diagnosed with the infectious virus.
The Indian Ministry of Health reports that the number of corona infections detected increased to 697,358, an increase of approximately 24,000.
Only the United States and Brazil have reported more corona infections.
The official death toll from the outbreak in India stands at 19,963. That is much lower than in other hard-hit countries.
The Indian authorities introduced a strict lockdown in March but later relaxed it again. New restrictions have also been introduced in some places to prevent the virus from spreading.
More than 11 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with the virus. The actual number of corona infections is probably much higher, because not all infected persons are tested.
