U.S. House of Representatives President Nancy Pelosi has urged Congress to have all 11 statues of Confederate leaders and soldiers removed from the Capitol.
“Their images are a tribute to hate, not heritage. They need to be removed,” Pelosi said in a letter.
“Monuments to men who advocate cruelty and barbarism for achieving such a clear racist goal are a grotesque affront to the ideals” of American democracy and freedom, the Democrat writes.
Discs come when there have been protests in America against racism and police brutality for weeks.
They started after the death of black American George Floyd due to police brutality.
The Confederacy was made up of southern states that fought north during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
The Confederacy opposed the abolition of slavery.
