Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is reluctant to sit down with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin later this year.

On Wednesday, the Russian ambassador in Jakarta said that Putin plans to visit the G20 summit in Indonesia. Morrison thinks this is “going a step too far”.

Morrison says Putin has “shattered the international legal order” with his invasion of Ukraine. Naturally, therefore, he has “expressed his concerns” about Russia’s participation in the important economic forum.

On Wednesday, Indonesia stressed that the G20 is an economic forum that discusses economic issues and political conflicts should be discussed at the United Nations. China has already said it supports Putin’s participation at the summit.

The G20 has been in existence since 1999 and is an international forum focused on economic cooperation and stability. Nineteen countries and the European Union are members of it. The countries also likely not to support a boycott of Putin are India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the three Latin American members of the G20 (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico).
