US President Donald Trump has criticized the strict lockdowns in Europe and ruled out such measures for the US despite the sharp rise in the number of infections.

“Look at what has happened in Europe,” Trump said Sunday evening (local time) during a campaign appearance in Hickory, North Carolina. “People revolt, they don’t want to and can’t do that anymore.”

He added, “Europe has imposed draconian lockdowns, and yet the number of infections is skyrocketing. The number of deaths is skyrocketing, and their economies – let’s face it, you see what is happening – they are in ruins.” He added that the US, of course, wishes only the best for Europe.

The Republican accused his Democratic challenger Joe Biden of imposing a lockdown in the US and “turning America into a prison state” if he wins the presidential election on Tuesday. “Biden’s lockdown will result in countless deaths and wipe out an entire generation of dreams.”

Trump again praised his crisis management in the corona pandemic, while a majority of Americans have been negative about it for months.

Biden has not announced a lockdown but has promised to listen to the advice of scientists. He wrote on Twitter on Sunday, “Donald Trump has given up trying to get the virus under control.”
