Former US President Donald Trump also took “top secret” documents from the White House to his Florida resort, two insiders report to The Washington Post. According to the American newspaper, it raises questions about why the paperwork was found outside the White House.
According to The Washington Post, it is unclear exactly how many of the documents found at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort were classified. Earlier, the paper revealed that the Justice Department had launched an investigation after filing officials secured 15 boxes of paperwork in Mar-a-Lago last month. That while Trump was no longer allowed to have official documents in his possession after his term in office.
The Washington Post writes that the top-secret classification is only applied to documents that “could cause exceptionally serious damage to national security if not disclosed without permission”. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice does not want to say anything about the investigation to the newspaper. A Trump spokesperson accused the anonymous sources of “spreading fake news”. According to him, there is only a “routine process” talk.
According to experts, it is not clear what the consequences will be for Trump if it is determined that he has indeed handled the documents incorrectly because no ex-president has yet been prosecuted for it.
