A painting by the British statesman Winston Churchill has fetched nearly 10 million euros at auction, a record amount.

The artwork was offered by actress Angelina Jolie, who received 9,577,460 euros for it. Auction house Christie’s announced this on Monday.

It concerns the painting Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, which the Prime Minister, who died in 1965, made in 1943 after the Casablanca Conference.

Churchill travelled to Marrakech with US President Roosevelt, after which he donated his painting to Roosevelt as a memento.

The painting, the only one that Churchill made during the Second World War, has yielded much more than expected. Christie’s took into account an amount between 1.7 and 2.9 million euros.
