Mexico became the country with the fourth-highest death toll from the coronavirus on Sunday, passing Italy.
This is evident from data released by Mexican health officials and global statistics maintained by the AFP news agency.
“There are 299,750 confirmed cases of infection and 35,006 deaths in Mexico,” health officials said. Italy currently has 34,954 coronavirus deaths.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Sunday that the pandemic is “losing intensity” in Mexico, and that “conservative media” is raising unnecessary alarms about the situation in the country.
Mexico registered 276 additional fatalities and 4,482 new infections on Sunday.
