Three people in Shanghai who were infected with Covid-19 died on Sunday. They are the first corona deaths in the Chinese metropolis since it went back into lockdown in March.
The victims were aged between 89 and 91, and all three were in poor health, the city council reported on social media.
For a long time, China has had great success with its zero-Covid policy. After the first months of the pandemic, the corona figures in the country remained very low for a long time.
But due to the emergence of the more contagious omikron variant, the virus is more difficult to control and more and more Chinese are becoming infected. As a result, tens of millions of people in other parts of the country also had to go into lockdown earlier this year.
Since March 10, 200 million tests have been carried out in Shanghai, on a population of 26 million, in an attempt to quell the most recent corona outbreak in the city.
