US authorities are considering banning Wi-Fi routers from Chinese manufacturer TP-Link, which has been linked to cyberattacks.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this on Wednesday based on insiders.
The sources said authorities are investigating whether the routers pose a risk to national security. The Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Justice have investigated the company. A possible sales ban could come into effect early next year. The sources said the Department of Commerce is reportedly working on a subpoena.
TP-Link is one of the largest manufacturers of Wi-Fi routers in the world. According to WSJ, the company has a market share of about 65 percent in the United States. In addition to routers, it also makes connected power outlets and security cameras, among other things, for consumers and business users.
