Germany has registered more than 890,000 Ukrainian citizens since the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24. However, it is unclear how many are currently left in Germany.

A significant proportion may have travelled to other countries or returned to Ukraine.

Ukrainians can travel to Germany and other EU countries without registering or applying for aid. In particular, those who stay with friends or family and do not report to the government do not initially appear in official statistics.

Almost two-thirds of the refugees registered in Germany are girls and women. More than 37 percent are under the age of 18, most of them of primary school age.

Ukrainians can obtain a residence and work permit for one year in the European Union. It can be extended for a maximum of three years.
