The number of people who have died worldwide as a result of the coronavirus has passed the one million mark. This is according to a count from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

 

The virus emerged in China at the end of last year and then spread around the world. At the end of June, half a million people had died from Covid-19 and by mid-August, three-quarters of a million.

The most victims (nearly 205,000) were in the United States, followed by Brazil (almost 142,000), India (over 95,000) and Mexico (over 76,000).

In fifth and sixth place in the United Kingdom, with more than 42,000 deaths and Italy (almost 36,000). In the Netherlands, according to figures from the university, 6,415 people have died of the virus.

Most infections have also been found in the US: more than 7.1 million. India, Brazil and Russia will follow.
