A South Korean court has issued a new arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol. An initial warrant expired on Monday, but Yoon was not arrested.

Anti-corruption investigators want to question him about the military emergency with which he may have attempted a coup d’état last month.

Yoon had been summoned three times to cooperate with the investigation. Because he failed to comply, an arrest warrant was issued. The authorities were subsequently unable to arrest him in time because his bodyguards and supporters managed to prevent him from doing so at the presidential palace.

Yoon is still inside, surrounded by hundreds of guards.

Parliament has suspended Yoon, but the Constitutional Court has not yet removed him from office. If he were to be arrested, it would be the first time that a sitting president has been arrested in South Korea. Choi Sang-mok will take over as president.
