The number of corona infections in Latin America has risen above 5 million, news agencies Reuters and AFP report on their own censuses.

Although the new coronavirus initially spread relatively slowly in South America, Central America and the Caribbean, it has been spreading rapidly in poor, densely populated cities on the continent in recent months.

The number of infections exceeded 5 million when Colombia reported more than ten thousand new cases in the night from Monday to Tuesday. Mexico has also reported relatively high numbers of new infections in recent days.

The Central American country came in third place on the list of countries with the most corona deaths on Friday. That’s according to the data from Johns Hopkins University 47,746.

Brazil has long been one of the hardest-hit countries. With more than 2.7 million infections, the country has the highest number of confirmed corona cases after the United States. Brazil also has the highest death toll after the US with 94,104.

The lung virus also engages in government circles. After recently Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro tested positive, his chief of staff also appears to have been infected on Tuesday. Bolivia reports that the tenth member of the government, the Minister of Energy and Mining, contracted the coronavirus.
