More than 58.7 million Americans have now voted in the US elections to be officially held next Tuesday.

That is already more than the total number of voters who joined the polls in 2016, CNN reports. Then there were a total of 58.3 million. At the time, the early voters made up 42 percent of all votes cast.

According to CNN, it is mainly young people who vote earlier than four years ago, possibly because of the coronavirus. The number of early voters increased the most in the state of New Jersey.

There are currently nine times as many votes cast compared to the same period during the election battle between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Early voting is also popular in Delaware and Virginia this year.

Early voters include President Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden. Trump voted “for a guy named Trump” in Florida on Saturday, he said at the polling station. Biden cast his vote on Friday, in his home state of Indiana.
