The number of people killed since the military coup in Myanmar has risen to more than 800.

 

At least 802 people have been killed in the violent crackdown on protesters by security forces, according to the human rights organization Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

In recent days, fierce fighting broke out between the army and local soldiers in Mindat, northwestern Myanmar. Thousands of residents of the city fled Monday to the surrounding villages and jungles to shelter from the violence of firearms. It is not yet clear whether and how many victims have fallen.

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly plans to develop a draft resolution on Myanmar on Tuesday. The resolution calls for “the immediate suspension of the direct and indirect supply, sale and transfer of arms, ammunition and other military equipment to Myanmar.”

Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom decided on Monday to impose sanctions on members and allies of the junta.

Major protests have broken out in Myanmar since the coup in February. They are brutally beaten by security forces, such as the army and the police. More than 4,000 people have been arrested, 20 of which have been sentenced to death, according to AAPP.
