Australia’s Labor Party has secured enough seats to secure a majority in parliament, new Prime Minister Anthony Albanian said on Tuesday. According to his party, it looks like Labor will get 76 seats, just enough for a majority.

This number may increase to 77 seats. As a result, the party does not have to form a minority government.

“Australians have placed their trust in us and that comes with a huge responsibility. An enormous responsibility to deliver on our promises, promises for which we have a clear mandate as a government with a majority in parliament,” Albanian said in a televised speech…

Albania’s centre-left party won parliamentary elections in Australia on May 21, after which he was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister last week. Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison soon admitted his defeat, but because the results in some regions were close and because there was a lot of voting by mail, the final result is still unknown after ten days.

Because Labor now has a majority, the party does not have to negotiate with the other, mostly small, parties in the House of Representatives to pass legislation. The government is still dependent on support from other parties in the Senate.

Albanian will hold a party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the composition of his cabinet. According to Australian media, he will announce this interpretation shortly afterwards.
